Are HR departments being sidelined in the acquisition of new learning technologies?

London | The use of new technology ensures that entire work areas and associated working methods in the company change fundamentally. After all, they are always tools that relieve the workforce of increasingly idle work. It is the task of the personnel developers to implement a sustainable workforce, but also modern working methods. At the same time, according to a recent study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in the UK, the human resources department is “least likely” to be involved in making decisions about the acquisition of new technology. Today, the debate includes cross-industry investment in AI and automation. In these two areas the Human Resources department is, as per CIPD, 55 % of all cases not involved in the decision. Even in the implementation phase, 45% of all companies surveyed still excluded personnel developers. At first glance, these figures seem alarmingly high, but are probably explained by the cross-departmental relevance of the topic. In the area of eLearning product procurement, personnel developers naturally play a more important role.

All the more reason, according to CIPD, for personnel developers to play an important and concrete role in the transformation of companies and working methods. For example, it is necessary to design a personnel strategy which, within the framework of AI deployment and automation, shows a location of the human-machine relationship for one’s own company and defines and subsequently addresses related goals. At the same time, it is important to use the new technology in the sense of improving the quality of the workplaces, so that job satisfaction and thus loyalty to the company increase. And last but not least, a corporate culture should be created that ensures innovation and adaptability on a long-term and sustainable basis. As an overriding framework, the very fundamental task of constantly supporting the workforce in gaining a satisfactory foothold in the changed and constantly changing working environment is of course also an important one.
